Mega Success in Megafinal

The Delancey Schools Chess Challenge may be the biggest children’s chess event in the world. It is played in three stages, 1) Megafinals  2) Gigafinals and 3) Terrafinals.

Chester Chess Club was represented by 16 children of whom 10 qualified for the Gigafinals. There were some very good, and some surprising results, and a few disappointments.

By far the best result was Sam Burchett’s perfect score of 6/6, to become Supremo in the under 11 section beating Ben Wood-Finden into 3rd place on 4.5/6 in the final round. Mike Hughes also qualified from this section with 3.5/6

Supremo Sam presented with his prize by Graham Bromley:

In the difficult 12 to under 18 section we saw three fine performances from Zach Bragg 12, Milan Kustos 13 and Abdelrahman (Boudy) Mahmoud 14, all qualifying and finishing on 3.5/6. A little disappointing were Jack Yang and Nethuli Saram who scored 3/6 and 2/6 respectively. Jack, not to be denied, played in the Cheadle Hulme event a few days later and scored a terrific 5/6 to become the Supremo of his section. Efe Kitis who didn’t play in the Chester event also qualified with 4/6 finishing in 2nd place at Cheadle.

In the under 10 section Harry Rafferty scored 4.5/6 and qualified comfortably in third place, but the sensation of the section was Mira Kustos who booked her place in the next round with 3.5/6.

There were more surprises in the under 7 and 8 section where George Turner scored 4/6 for 2nd place and Yehia Mahmoud also qualified with 3.5/6.

Close but no Clock in Little Lever

Expectations were high after Chester won a set and board a couple of years ago in this fine Bolton-organised team tournament. Swapping in Crocker for White was perhaps a selection error as we were no longer eligible for any rating prize. Nevertheless the team of McDonagh, Crocker, Lloyd and Emerton lost only one match against winners Stockport. Not quite enough to win a clock though…

Keith Emerton, pictured below in trademark concentration pose, pulled off the tightest win against Bolton 2, reaching the win with only a couple of seconds left.

Chess Down Under

Visiting my sister in Ballarat near Melbourne I (Phil C) had the chance to play in the local Begonia Open. The organisers arrange for several Australian GMs/ IMs to play and then throw all the players into one open tournament with big grading prizes. Nigel Short won it a couple of years ago when they had a 50th anniversary.

This year GM Anton Smirnov and IM James Morris won with 6/7. Helped by a favourable draw I managed to join the trailing group on 5.5/7.

If you happen to be in Australia then it’s a fun if tiring 3-day tournament to play.

Chester don’t win quite so big in Frodsham

This weekend saw the annual Frodsham congress. We entered the most players with 12 players allowing us to enter three teams (!) in the team competition. However, our results generally disappointed. James Lee and Seth Collinson both scored a creditable 3/5 in the Major. In the Open Phil Crocker managed 3.5/5, a rare occasion when this was sufficient for joint 2nd place.

Burchett, Lee and Buckley win big in Stockport

A number of members entered the Stockport Rapid this Sunday. Sam Burchett won the junior prize with 4/6 after storming to 4/5. (Your photographer was a bit slow off the mark, but it’s definitely Sam in the black hoodie). Ben Woodfinden managed 2.5 in the minor, recovering well from a slow start.

In the major James Lee and Colm Buckley tied for third with 4.5/6 with James also winning the grading prize. Colm managed to win a crunch match against Ben’s dad along the way!

In the open Phil Crocker and Mike McDonagh weren’t quite so successful against a small but tough field. We lost to Nigel Davies and Joe McPhillips respectively in round one and then never fully recovered. Mike did have the satisfaction of winning our individual battle though!
