Burchett, Lee and Buckley win big in Stockport

A number of members entered the Stockport Rapid this Sunday. Sam Burchett won the junior prize with 4/6 after storming to 4/5. (Your photographer was a bit slow off the mark, but it’s definitely Sam in the black hoodie). Ben Woodfinden managed 2.5 in the minor, recovering well from a slow start.

In the major James Lee and Colm Buckley tied for third with 4.5/6 with James also winning the grading prize. Colm managed to win a crunch match against Ben’s dad along the way!

In the open Phil Crocker and Mike McDonagh weren’t quite so successful against a small but tough field. We lost to Nigel Davies and Joe McPhillips respectively in round one and then never fully recovered. Mike did have the satisfaction of winning our individual battle though!

Savidge wins the Christmas Blitz

Thanks to everyone who turned up for the Blitz, with special thanks being reserved for David Hulme without whose involvement the tournament could not have been ran. Daniel Savidge won the prestigious title of Chester Chess Club Christmas Blitz Champion for the second time after a fine win in a tense and tactic filled Armageddon playoff with the black pieces against Paul Woodfinden.

1st = Daniel Savidge, Paul Woodfinden
3rd = Ian Clayton, Jack Yang

There was a good turn out of 26 people which we hope to see again future years.
